Manizha Talash is a breakdancer in Kabul, Afghanistan. She found breakdancing through a video online at the age of 17. She stated, “When I saw a video on Facebook of a man just spinning over his head ... I instantly told myself: 'That's what I want to do with my life!”.

After some time, she found that person and discussed that she also wanted to learn breakdancing. She joined the club of breakdancing in Kabul's dynamic Superiors Crew. She was the only girl among 55 boys there.

Manizha Talash is Afghanistan's first lady in breakdancing, but many Afghans do not like her dancing profession. Her family is also not supportive in this matter, but Manizha continues her struggle with great passion.

Difficulties for the Manizha Talash

In a country experiencing political and cultural change where women's roles in public are particularly examined, the breakdancing gym in Kabul was attacked several times. Outside the venue, a car bomb burst into flame, and in a different incident, police caught a potential suicide bomber. The dancers had limited options when the club finally closed due to security issues.

Since Talash was a female breakdancer, she also began to receive death threats. At that point, to keep her loved ones safe from harm, she decided to alter her name. Talash is the Persian word for "aiming."

She kindly explained, "I was only worried for my family," and insisted that the threats of death could not stop her from realizing her goals.

Talash did not wait for the Afghans to ban music, restrict girls' access to school, or take away their ability to go to gyms, parks, and fairs. With her 12-year-old brother, she ran into Pakistan after realizing her dreams of becoming a breakdancer were no longer achievable.

Manizha Talash in the Olympics

Talash, one of the 16 B-girls competing in the Paris Olympics 2024 for a medal, will not be raising the Afghan flag or serving her country. Rather, she will be competing as a member of the Olympic Refugee Team, which is made up of athletes who have been forced to leave their home countries and are unable to live and compete there.

This year's selection for the squad, which started at the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016, consists of 36 players from 11 different countries, five of which are primarily from Afghanistan breakdown. They will compete by flying a unique flag with an arrow-encircled heart as the symbol, which is meant to represent "the shared experience of their journeys."

Manizha Talash Dreams

Talash will take place worldwide as a representative of the aspirations and voices of Afghani women.

The athlete openly said, "I'm here; it's not because I'm afraid of the Taliban or it's because of my life, no." "I want to fulfil my big dream and help the Afghan girls."

After her first appearance at the Olympics, Talash intends to launch a clothing brand inspired by her native nation. This may even provide employment opportunities for women who would not otherwise be able to.
