Cam Skattebo, a standout player for Arizona State, is presently getting ready for the 2025 NFL Draft. And the courtroom, probably. According to Zach Buchanan of the Phoenix New Times, the All-Big 12 first-team player was recognized as a defendant in a lawsuit signed by a former Arizona State teammate who states Skattebo caused a golf cart accident that rendered him gravely injured.
Skattebo was currently added to the case that plaintiff Mattheos Katergaris had reportedly filed against the Arizona Board of Regents in May over the occurrence. According to reports, Katergaris, a walk-on right lineman, is accusing Skattebo and the board of at least $300,000 in damages on one count of negligence each.
Golf Cart Incident Lawsuit
According to reports, the particular tragedy took place on July 31, 2023. He and another player, according to Katergaris, were positioned at the rear of a golf cart that was utilized to move players from the practice area to the locker room. Importantly, the team had been advised "on or around" the prior day that the cart's main seat could only hold two passengers or 600 pounds.
According to the New Times, Skattebo's claimed activities put that restriction to the test:
As the golf cart went a far way, Skattebo, the third player, "then climbed on the back of the golf cart" and "climbed up and down on the main bench," according to the lawsuit. The golf cart's rear bench then faced a structural failure. After slipping from the cart, Katergaris "suffered serious bodily injury, which overcame in months of medical care."
ASU Player Injury Case
Although the kind and intensity of those injuries are unknown, the board allegedly stated in a petition that Katergaris "over-treated and/or generated unnecessary and/or unreasonable expenses" in his medical care and that the school "has already invested for some or all" of his recovery.
It also stated that it "has reason to think Defendant Skattebo boarded the back of the golf cart while two other players were seated on the rear section" along with "confesses that the rear bench of the golf cart broke."
As a freshman in 2022, Katergaris was last recognized on the Sun Devils' roster. He took part in scout team training that season, but in accordance with ASU's website, he did not appear in a game. It's unclear if he ever joined another group; however, he went into the transfer portal in 2023.
Skattebo's Impressive Season
After moving from Sacramento State to Arizona State in 2023, Skattebo rose to reputation last season with a tragic running style that assisted the Sun Devils to get to the raised College Football Playoffs.
He made fifth in the Heisman Trophy vote and finished with 1,711 running yards in 13 games, second only to Ashton Jeanty of Boise State. He is now getting prepared for this weekend's NFL scouting meet and is expected to be chosen in the middle of the draft.
