Brian Pintado and weightlifter Neisi Dajomes were selected by the Ecuadorian National Olympic Committee on June 6, 2024, to serve as the official flag carriers at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Brian Pintado won his first athletics gold in the men's 20-kilometer race walk, and Yang Jiayu of China won the women's competition.

Winners of the Olympics Walk Race

At the 2024 Summer Olympics spots in Paris, Brian Pintado of Ecuador men won the 20-kilometer race, winning the first gold medal in athletics. The 29-year-old set a new national record in the athletics event, clocking 1:18:55, the first in the sport since fellow racewalker Jefferson Perez achieved a gold medal in 1996.

World champion Alvaro Martin got bronze in 1:19:11, while Brazil's Caio Bonfim won silver in 1:19:09. Italy's current champion, Massimo Stano, came in fourth, almost missing out on a medal.

Walk Race Competition

Similar to numerous historic championship race walk competitions, this race was defined by destruction, as the leading group was gradually reduced to the last handful of competitors in the finale. The race began steadily, with Zhang Jun of China leading a sizable group through the first five kilometres in 20:19.

The event was held along the Pont de'Iena bridge in the Trocadero neighborhood of Paris, with a one-kilometer circle track taking competitors under the Eiffel Tower.

The field picked up a little speed as Bonfim led in 40:21 for the halfway point. The large leading group of roughly 26 runners included Pintado, Martin, Stano, Perseus Karlstrom of Sweden, Paul McGrath of Spain, and Declan Tingay of Australia.

Brian Pintado Performance

By the time Zhang and Pintado began to speed up, the lead pack had reduced to 16 men. Karlstrom, the winner of both the European and World Race Walking Team Championships, was one of the people removed. Pintado, Martin, Stano, McGrath, Bonfim, Koki Ikeda, and Yuta Koga stayed at the front, covering 16 km in 1:04:00, precisely 1:20 minutes per lap.

Throughout the last two laps, Bonfim and Pintado swapped the lead multiple times, with Martin finishing in third, a few seconds ahead of Stano. Pintado broke free from Bonfim as they started their last lap and passed under the Eifel Tower for the last time.

Over a 35-kilometer course, world silver medallist Brian Pintado finished in 1:18:55 to win gold, finishing 14 seconds ahead of Bonfim.
