The 17th Summer Paralympic Games, organized by the International Paralympic Committee, were an international multi-sport parasports competition. They were commonly called the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and promoted as Paris 2024.
The Games, which took place in Paris, France, from August 28 to September 8, 2024, featured 549 medal events in 22 sports. The goal of Paris 2024 was to make it the most broad and affordable Olympics ever, emphasizing youth involvement, sustainability, and equal rights for women.
The Games also highlighted France's rich cultural legacy with activities in famous locations like the Palace of Versailles, Champs-Élysées, and the Eiffel Tower.
Paris 2024 throws an Epic Party
Paris has been happy, cheered, raised in standing ovations, wept, and gone mute in wonder during the past eleven days. With a crashing performance by the heavyweights of French techno, breakdancing, fireworks, and laser beams, France threw the greatest celebration it has ever held on 8 September night to wave farewell to the Paralympic Games.
People came to the French capital to bid final goodbye to the summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, crowding the 64,000-seat Stade de France.
Closing Performances
As the nation hosted its first-ever Paralympic Summer Games, expectations were high, particularly following a difficult Paralympic cycle during which COVID-19 limits were in effect.
A record number of National Paralympic Committees participated, groundbreaking ceremonies were held in front of crowded stands, breathtaking athletic performances were given in legendary sites, and the Paralympic Refugee Team won medals for the first time ever. Paris 2024 lived up to the expectations.
20 DJs Performance
The final segment of the event featured performances by France's top 20 DJs, including Cassius and the techno creator Jean-Michel Jarre, who created an unforgettable environment. It has been a fantastic month and a half in Paris, and on Sunday, the competitors and the audience survived the rain to dance to some amazing music.
Paralympic Flag
The 169 delegates had earlier paraded to the rhythm of beloved French songs, with the audience singing along. At the closing ceremony, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass became the first Black woman mayor to accept the Paralympic flag when she was given it by Paralympic Committee Head Andrew Parsons, who had received it from Mayor Anne Hidalgo of Paris.
Andrew Parsons Statements
President of the International Paralympic Committee, Andrew Parsons, stated, "We all have a collective duty to take advantage of the excitement of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games to make the world around us more accessible." "What a legacy this would leave for the 1.3 billion people who are disabled around the world - not only for these athletes.
"Our differences and diversity shouldn't keep us apart. Our distinct characteristics should unite us, spur progress, and improve life on Earth for all."
