India will play Germany in a two-test series for the first time in 10 years, marking the excellent return of hockey to New Delhi. In what could be an exciting series, India will be looking for payback against Germany for their Olympic heartbreak.
After a ten-year break, hockey returns to New Delhi as the Indian team takes on Germany in a two-test bilateral series scheduled for October 23–24. The epic matchup will take place at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, which has produced some timeless moments in recent years.
One of Asia's most successful teams is the Men in Blue. Their four Asian Games victories are from 1966, 1998, 2014, and 2022. India became victorious in the Asia Cup in 2003, 2007, and 2017. India now holds the records for the most wins and the best winning percentage in the Asia Cup, having won 43 of 56 games.
History
- Golden years (1928–1959)
In 1928, India made its girls Olympic appearances. Without giving up a goal, India defeated Austria 6–0, Belgium 9–0, and Switzerland 5–0 in the group stage. Under Jaipal Singh Munda's leadership, they won the finals 3-0 over the Netherlands.
India maintained its position as the most successful and dominant team by winning two more gold medals in 1952 and 1956. India defeated Austria 4–0 in the Olympic quarterfinals in 1952, Great Britain 3–1 in the semifinals, and the Netherlands 6–1 in the championship match.
- Last years of dominance (1960–1980)
India's campaign at the 1960 Olympics began with victories over Denmark (10–0), the Netherlands (4–1), and New Zealand (3-0). In the quarterfinals and semifinals, India won over Australia and Great Britain.
It was the start of a new era in the final, when India lost to Pakistan 0-1 for the first time at the Olympics, ending their run of 30 games without a loss and six consecutive gold medals. India won another silver medal at the 1962 Asian Games two years later.
