Two of the Australian women's leagues, AFLW and WBBL, have achieved record-breaking ratings and earned significant attention from their fans in 2024. The former league (Australian Women Football League) streamed highest, while the latter (Women Big Bash League) followed in their footsteps by streaming in point next to it on all Foxtel Group platforms.
The general manager of the Foxtel group, Michael Neill, and the executive director, Rebecca McCloy, are thrilled and excited about the rapid success, growth, and prosperity of both leagues. They are of the opinion that their commitment to improving women's teams proves fruitful.
AFLW Breaks Previous Streaming Records
AFLW 2024 earns enormous popularity as it comes up with the highest streaming numbers. Foxtel Group platforms, such as Kayo Sports, Foxtel Go, Foxtel Now, and BINGE, recorded this massive move. In addition, fans attached to the games and watched AFLW games for a total of 179 million minutes.
Remember, last year's streaming value was only 61% of the total AFLW games, while in 2024, only the grand finale between North Melbourne and Brisbane is recorded with the highest viewership, with a 31% increase year-on-year.
On this point, the general manager of the Fox Footy platform, Michael Neill, expressed his happiness and excitement about women’s sports and its massive viewership as a positive sign of its success. Furthermore, he dedicated the credit for this success to the partnership between AFL and Fox Footy.
WBBL Sets New Streaming Records
Just like AFLW, WBBL is no different and walks in the same direction. In 2024, it broke viewership records and came up with the best streaming values. It became the most-watched season in its entire history and recorded a 41% increase year-on-year compared to the previous year.
Moreover, WBBL fans and sports enthusiasts view the league for a total of 132 million minutes. It is the fourth consecutive year of WBBL’s growth, coming up with one of the top five most-watched games—a grand finale between the Melbourne Renegades and Brisbane Heat.
In this regard, the Executive Director of Commercial Sport of the Foxtel Group, Rebecca McCloy, shared her happiness about the women’s team's growth. She also conveyed appreciation to Cricket Australia for this achievement. Rebecca further believes that WBBL’s participation in Foxtel’s Summer of Cricket will help increase the audience more than before.
In addition, the executive general manager of the Big Bash League, Alistair Dobson, highlighted that WBBL has become the world’s best women’s cricket league, conducting top-notch team encounters and a loyal fan base.
WBBL Outstanding Teams
Both leagues undoubtedly come up with the highest ratings and viewership. It is time you must know the several WBBL matches that make this win possible. Among them is a rematch grand finale between Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers. Also, the Strikers, Scorchers, and Renegades are included in the category of the most watched games of the season.
Upcoming Events
Besides Women's Big Bash League matches, there are Men’s Second Test series between Australia and India and the Men’s Big Bash League (BBL). The former will be on December 5, while the latter will be on December 15.
