Zachary Edward Martin is an American guard who played for the Dallas Cowboys for 11 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He was selected to the NFL 2010 All-Decade Team and was a member of nine Pro Bowls and nine All-Pro teams.
Feb 21, 2025: According to sources, Zack Martin, one of the Dallas Cowboys' most adorned offensive guards, decided to retire. The Dallas Cowboys may be about to see the end of an era as one of their best players ever wears one of their jerseys. Martin spoke with Jerry Jones, the owner and general manager, to discuss his decision.
11 Seasons with Cowboys
During his 11 years with the Cowboys, Martin was selected to the Pro Bowl nine times. Jason Witten (11), who is qualified for the Hall of Fame for the first time this season, and Hall of Famers Bob Lilly (11), Larry Allen (10), and Mel Renfro (10) have been named to more. Martin equalled Lilly and Hall of Famer Randy White for the most first-team All-Pro selections in team history with 7.
Seven first-team All-Pro choices also surpass him for the most of any guard in history, along with John Hannah and Randall McDaniel. Aaron Donald, a former defensive end for the Los Angeles Rams, is the only player selected to be on the first All-Pro team since Martin joined the NFL in 2014.
Performance throughout his Career
Martin, who was selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, started 162 games and only missed more than one game in a season in 2020 and 2024. From 2010 to 2021, he was also selected to the NFL's All-Decade team. He was only able to play 10 games in 2024 due to an ankle disorder that needed surgery. During his final two seasons, he battled through several injuries until his strength was weak to maintain his top level of performance.
Martin suppressed rumors that he was retiring when his season was decided and at training camp last summer. In multiple appearances before Super Bowl LIX, Martin stated that he wanted to recover before making a decision on his future.
Zack Martin Contracts
After missing the majority of 2023's training camp, Martin agreed to an updated contract that gave him the third-highest-paid guard in the NFL and guaranteed him $36 million over the previous two seasons.
Last offseason, Martin renegotiated his deal so that the Cowboys might receive some salary cap benefit if he decided to retire in 2025. He will count $9.4 million against the 2025 cap and $17 million against the 2026 cap if the Cowboys decide to grant him a post-June 1 cut. The Cowboys suffer both on and off the pitch when he is not there.
